the next wave

This series of photographs portray adolescent boys on the cusp of manhood. The young men are surfers, sharing a physical and spiritual connection to the sea. It is their play ground, a place to enjoy each others company, to relax but also a place to grow and develop. The boys are captured in a relaxed state as they leave the water.

Liminality is the space between two states or conditions, a transitional zone where transformations and change take place.

Photographed where land meets the sea, the tidal zone where saltwater ebbs and flows like the fluctuating emotions of fourteen year old boys. Confident, vulnerable, knowing and unknowing. Photographed at dusk, when day greats night with an afterglow, a moment between.

A geographical, emotional and physical shift between boundaries.
