Youth Off The Streets 2019

Ripples - Art Off The Streets”, is a collection highlighting the creative expression of over fifty students from Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets. Students engaged in a variety of mediums from traditional cyanotype photographic printing to sculpture, drawing, painting, writing, soundscapes, street art and film-making. All works are interwoven with the element of water, expressed both physically and metaphorically.

The central work celebrates The Circle of Courage the underlying philosophy that unites all Youth Off The Streets schools. Based on the philosophies of traditional Native American child-rearing, Brokenleg, Brendtro and Van Bocken (1990) devised a positive youth development framework, or medicine wheel, referred to as The Circle of Courage. Medicine wheels are a place to come together, reflect, teach, restore and heal. The work invites audiences to join students in their morning ‘circle’ and to reflect upon their feelings and place in the world. In creating this artwork students displayed great trust, respect, teamwork and tremendous patience.

While exploring identity students were gently encouraged out of their comfort zone, taking leaps of faith, while learning new ways of expressing themselves. Many were empowered by the experience of having their voices heard, in sharing their personal and moving stories.
